Choose a Resolution for the Viewing Distance
A higher pixel density can preserve fine detail at close viewing distance, while a large poster viewed from farther away may not need the same density. Ask the print provider for its file specifications before exporting final artwork.
- 300 DPI is a common close-viewed print target, not a universal guarantee.
- Cropping changes both the aspect ratio and the pixels available for printing.
- Changing only the DPI metadata does not add captured detail.

What is the print-size formula?
Print width in inches equals pixel width divided by DPI. For centimeters, multiply the inch result by 2.54.
How many pixels is 200 DPI?
DPI alone does not determine a pixel count; you also need the print size. A 4 × 6 inch print at 200 PPI needs 800 × 1,200 pixels.
How many pixels does an 8 × 10 print need at 300 DPI?
It needs at least 2,400 × 3,000 pixels before any bleed or cropping allowance.
Is 300 PPI the same as 300 DPI?
They describe different things: PPI measures image pixels per inch, while DPI measures printer dots. Print instructions often use 300 DPI as shorthand for a 300 PPI source image.
Does changing DPI add image detail?
No. Changing a DPI metadata value alone does not create new source detail. Resampling can add pixels, but it cannot recover detail that was never captured.
